# The public web is dead

In 2006, I was working at Universal Music in Norway. Next door in Sweden, the police raided The Pirate Bay, and our offices went into a [celebratory frenzy](https://x.com/basedlayer/status/2014079051225239609?ref=cms.perception.to).

The labels spent millions trying to fight the technology and it failed because they missed a fundamental shift: distribution ceased to matter.

The pipes became free, and the bottleneck shifted to curation.

Industries acrros all sectors are repeating this mistake today, including the digital asset industry.

Since AI has made building cheap, founders are panicking about distribution, thinking the pipes are the only moat left.

But distribution channels are now just a void of infinite AI noise. When anyone can output infinite text, Communications/PR/Marketing is just noise.

Survival in this environment requires what I call **narrative engineering**.

This means treating narrative not as vibes, but as a technical resource.

You build data pipelines to map competitor voice, track memetic crossover points, and treat stories as structural assets with raw sensors.

If you are still tracking your market by reading news clippings or running manual searches, you are monitoring a graveyard.

If you are querying AI models without live context, they average the slop.
